The Inspiring Story of Loyola Old Age Home
Date Published

The foundation of compassion
In the serene surroundings of Visakhapatnam, the Loyola Old Age Home stands as a beacon of hope. Founded by Shri Prakash Rao Garu, inspired by his father and supported by his wife Mani, the home is a sanctuary for the elderly and the mentally ill, offering care, dignity and a sense of belonging.
Resilience in the face of adversity
The home was born from the wreckage of the Hudhud cyclone. Shri Prakash Rao sold his ITI institutes and, with the proceeds and materials salvaged from the destruction, rebuilt with the help of friends. Debris and broken tiles became the foundation of a new beginning; even discarded commodes found new life as plant pots.
A home of kindness and care
Across four floors, the home shelters around 175 residents, from elders to people living with mental health challenges. Residents are treated with kindness and spend their days in activities like gardening. When a woman eight months pregnant faced abandonment, the home took her in. That is the kind of place it is.
Our contribution
When we learned the home needed better sleeping facilities, Ganesh Charitable Society contributed Rs. 1,25,000 for ten high-quality steel cots. It is a small part of a much bigger story, and exactly the kind of cause we exist to find: real people doing selfless work, one step from a better night of sleep.
A legacy continues
As Shri Prakash Rao ages, his daughter now carries the stewardship of the home, and the legacy of service continues. If this story moves you, come be a part of the next one. Write to us and we will find the cause that fits.
